Aotea Disc form pendant
SKUA hand crafted Disc form pendant carved in Aotea jade. Here are some words from the artist about the type of stone, its meaning and symbolism within the Māori world; "Aotea is an exceptionally vibrant stone that can show colors of Blue, green, white and black. A story I remember about Aotea is that it was the Gift Rūaumoko gave to Rangi (Sky), Papa (Earth) and Tangaroa (Ocean). The intention of this gift was to bring peace to this unsettled world. Aotea is only found in New Zealand and is prized by the people of Kāti Mahaki/ Makaawhio. The nature of this particular Aotea ( reminded me) of stories of how the sky was divided into layers. Some say Tāne Climbed these heavens, others give credit to Tāwhaki. Such stories made me reflect on how the heavens guide us. They directed the navigators here, orators directed the spirits of our deceased to “return to the heavens, the true home of Mankind”. Those who have passed on are often referred to as “you who have become as eyes in the night sky”. I have used all the stones I gathered in my journeys to create this piece. And so we look to the heavens to direct us as we recognise that the true nature of man is spirit.“ We are all just walking each other home”.-Babba ram Das."
