Breastplate or Kouma
Breastplates, or Kouma, traditionally served as a shield and gave courage, protection and a feeling of safety to the wearer in battle. It is a symbol of strength and leadership. The Pounamu breastplate is thought of as a shield, giving the wearer strength and offering them protection throughout their life. Early examples of the breastplate date back to earliest Maori history, evolving as a type of body armour, while also mirroring the shape of the human physique.
