A large hand crafted stained Matau pendant carved in bone by Kerry Thompson   

This piece is carved in natural bone so rather than being bleached, it retains the interesting natural colours and textures that give it a more antique look.   

Complete with a waxed braid cord and carved bone toggle, it also includes traditional style woven presentation pouch and a detailed description of the meaning of the carving.

The Maori people were great mariners and fishermen so the Matau is therefore one of the most powerful symbols used in Maori culture as it represents prosperity, abundance and fertility.    
It also is said to provide good luck and safety when traveling over water.
