Māori were honourable fighters and in the close confines of New Zealand's dense bush small hand weapons were the most practical to use. The mere were most often carved in stone or jade and were used like a knife with a stabbing movement so needed a strong wrist tether to keep them in the hand while fighting. The greenstone mere is highly valued and was passed down from generation to generation.

Nowadays there are used for ceremonial purposes and to convey mana and respect for the artform to the beholder. The mere represents authority and triumph over adversity,
