Sio

Bone, Antler & Corian Pendants

Sio (Visesio Siasau) who was born in Tonga but is now living in New Zealand and is married to a wonderful Maori lady is a contemporary and traditional artist.
He works in a variety of mediums and his art reflects his diverse Pacific and Maori heritage, his passion for traditional mythology and his very unique contemporary viewpoint.
Sio is studying arts and culture at university and is well known throughout the artist community in New Zealand
His designs are deceptively simple in form but embody the power and grace of his mixed heritage.  He is a master of the traditional methods and carries on his family tradition of bone carving but applies these to both ancient and
modern materials.

Sio will repeat some of the standard designs such as the Matau on request but every carving is a labor of love, hand drawn and hand carved so no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.

Once each piece sells it will be removed from our site permanently.

All carvings are supplied complete with a traditional style cord & bag.
Most cords are hand made from black waxed braid with a loop and bone toggle fitted. A woven flax presentation case and information on the meaning of the design is also included.

Fast airmail shipping worldwide is now just US$6.95 for up to 5 pendants.

Large Bone Cravings Featuring Complex Traditional Bindings

These are the large and intricately bound traditional carvings often worn by Maori warriors when performing ceremonial dances or greetings.  They are simple in form but carry with them an irresistible aura of strength and power.
These carvings feature exquisite heavy traditional binding and hand platted cords with bound loops and carved bone toggles. They are true examples of the ancient craft.
They are made to be worn but
are equally stunning when framed as art pieces.

Deer Antler Carvings

Carved from base or crown of the naturally caste off deer antlers. The antlers are dropped by the deer at the end of the mating season so no animals have been harmed at all.
Most of these carvings also come with the original crown from which each was carved. The crowns make great display stands and a place to rest the carving when it is not being worn.
Measurements shown are for the carvings only and don't include the size of the crown.

Hand Carved Corian

Traditional styling with a distinctly modern twist.
Corian is a man made composite stone very similar to the composite granite often used to make fine quality bench tops.
S uses this modern material in a very unique way hand carving both contemporary and traditional works as the thickness and fine grain structure of Corian allows him to experiment with more 3D forms.
It is a very hard and also inert material making it ideal for hard wearing pendants, sculptures and other artworks but is also ideally suited to those who have allergies to other not inert types of material such as bone.
