The Huia is a now extinct bird whose feathers we so precious and sacred that they were worn as hair adornment by only the most high ranking Maori and only for ceremonial occasions with the feathers being stored in a specially carved wooden box when not being worn.
A Maori treasure box is referred to as a Wakahuia which liberally means a sacred vessel containing Huia feathers.
