The Matau is a fish hooks often carved from bone or wood. It is a symbol of leadership, power and abundance but also provides protection when traveling and shows a respect for the oceans.
The Pa Kahawai is a very traditional trolling lure which was trolled behind a canoe to catch powerful predatory surface fish such as the Kahawai (often called sea trout) Larger versions were used to catch king fish and even marlin.
The bone barb is mounted on a bright Paua (Abalone) shell shank to attract the fish.
