The seahorse is not common in the colder waters of the South Pacific. It is however and important symbol in areas where it is found (Northland and the Bay of Islands) where it is said to represent peace, purity and spirituality. Some also believed that it was the infant form of the great Taniwha, a sea monster who protects the oceans.
