The Kowhai is a large tree with bright yellow flowers which attract native nectar feeding birds such as the Tui. As such the Kowhai was regarded as a sacred tree and the flowers the entranceway into the world for all beauty and song. The Kowhai flower is seen as a symbol of good luck and greatly respected by the Maori for its fine form and vibrant colour.
