The heart is the universal symbol of love.
The Kawakawa is a native New Zealand shrub in the pepper tree family and is widely used for its medicinal properties. The caterpillars of the native looper moth love it so much that Kawakawa leaves are easily recognized by the profusion of caterpillars holes in every single leaf.
The type of mottled dark green jade from which this amazing piece is carved was named "Kawakawa" by the Maori after the dark green Kawakawa leaves so it is a very appropriate stone for this carving.
