Huge Chatoyant Tangiwai Toki by Malcolm Cox


A very large Toki pendant with complex binding and hand carved in New Zealand Chatoyant Tangiwai by Malcolm Cox.  

Tangiwai Pounamu is actually a type of bowenite which is different in chemical composition to the more common nephrite jades. 
Chatoyance or the "cat's eye effect" which is a bit like the sheen off a spool of silk, shows as constantly changing colours and patterns inside the stone.  As you move the drop the patterns and streaks of light inside appear swirl around within.

Includes an adjustable plaited waxed braid cord, a traditional woven presentation case and a detailed description of the meaning of the carvings.

This is a one of a kind piece by virtue of the amazing stone from which it was carved so it will be permanently removed from our gallery when sold.    

The Toki is the adze blade was bound onto a wooden handle and used to carve the great canoes and details on the meeting houses.   It represents a creative or artistic person and the coming together of head, hand and heart.
