About The Artist:

Jonathon Lokes is a largely self-taught jeweller and carver who realized in the late 1990s that he possessed a natural gift for fine carving. Being uneducated about can't dos, he is able to work with a high degree of novelty.
His art is influenced by the historically sequential art periods Pre-Raphaelite, Nouveau and Art Deco. Most evident is the eye-pleasing linear co-relationships of Nouveau, known as the Arts and Crafts movement.

Through a tour of British museums and manors, castles, fabric design centres etc. Jonathon Jono Lokes discovered an exhibition of the World Medallion Competition. He was surprised that a kiwi woman was Number One that year (1995), and was inspired to attempt this style of work. Jono detected in Britain a hunger for nature icons as a reaction to environmental destruction in the northern hemisphere. He also noted the demand for icons of historical tribalism - Celtic/Saxon/Viking etc. Jonos English/Nordic ancestry is evident in his use of animals and flowing line.
Under the above influences the artist seeks a maximum of detail and fineness. His work is often described as intricate and beautiful (lacy).
Jono prefers to work with organic materials such as bone, stone, wood, shell and gem. The nature of his subjects is often interactive, featuring action and reaction e.g. predator and prey. He makes generous use of high colour by mixing these materials through such techniques as inlay/overlay and general innovation.

Jono has a background in landscaping, hunting, tramping and organic horticulture and has maintained a life-long interest in ornithology, zoology and anthropology. He is generally steeped in the natural world.

Jono lives on 2.5 acres of country gardens in Marlborough, called Ottercopse Moss. He lives with his partner Marion and children, Dane (3) and Ruby (11). When not carving his time is spent creating features and additions to the gardens, designing art concepts or - for a break - hunting in the local mountain forests.
