Kauri Amber Carvings

Hand carved from pure Kauri Amber which is the fossilized sap of the giant native Kauri tree. 

Most is 30,000 to 40,000 years old while some can be millions of years old so Kauri amber is a very rare treasure with an unbelievable aura.  Floating within its golden or clear form are small pieces of ancient plants and sometimes even insects from the ancient forest floor, long before the time of man.

Amber is not heavy like jade, it is actually very light weight, almost like a plastic so is very easy to wear.

IN THE BEGINNING

This large art piece contains over 670 individually hand cut bovine bone pieces, inlayed into 45,000 years old swamp Kauri slab.
It won premier award in the New Zealand OBJECTive Art Awards 2009.

Throughout the World there are countless myths of Creation. All seem to have their underlying root in linking Man to his origin, both spiritually and physically.  The Maori legend of Creation; the separation of Papatuanuku and Te Ranginui, by Tanemahuta, their son, like its counterparts, has its origin in that time when Man and Woman looked to their environment in order to discover and describe their place and relationship within the world.

This work aims to explore the relationship of Man and Nature throughout the course of Time.
The central idea is that although Nature can be defined and shaped by cultures, it also holds within it the raw resources for our progression, as well as the means for comprehension of our place within it.

The natural components, although contrasting, are combined together in this work to portray the faces of Papatuanuku and Te Ranginui, cloaked within the landscape as Mother Earth and Father Sky.
They are a reminder that: The grand design is the great art, optimized to meet every objective.

About The Artist - Lilach Paul

Lilach chose to work in bone for many reasons but one of the main ones was that bone in her language also means "essence". When Lilach carves in bone she feels that it allows her to portray the real essence of her thoughts and feelings as well as being the ideal medium for the incredibly fine detailed work which is her signature.

Azure:
Azure is a close friend of Lilach's and they work together on many of their creations.  She has the same passion and a very unique artistry about her work so Lilach and Azure compliment each other perfectly in their craft.
