Sue Daumiller
Scrimshaw Artist

Sue is a master traditional scrimshaw artist.
She is passionate about the art and the authenticity of the designs so spends hundreds of hours studying images of tall ships and the whaling lifestyle to make every piece a true work of art right down to the finest detail.
Sue is a sailor herself and has a real affinity for the ocean and the wind which is why she likes to carve her tall ships under full sail.
Sue learned her craft in Hawaii as part of a group who wanted to stop the whaling but preserve the craft of scrimshaw using fossil materials.

Sue works in fossilized Walrus tusk and fossilized Mammoth tusk which has been in the ground for many hundreds and even thousands of years. This makes the material very hard and forms a crystalline structure that is both beautiful and unique in every piece, the perfect compliment to her art.

She also occasionally does pieces from Tagua nut which is a very hard material so is often referred to as vegetable ivory.

Authentic scrimshaw work and artists are very rare so we are proud to be able to feature this small collection of work by a wonderful and talented lady.

All of these special pieces are custom hand engraved works of art that are unique in terms of the special piece of fossilized bone used and the hand engraved nature of the patterns applied.
Sue will do custom work on request and can re-ink old scrimshaw pieces but will not duplicate or re carve them.
Photographs shown on this page are of the actual pieces being offered.

Once each piece sells it will be removed from our site permanently.

All carvings are supplied complete with a traditional style cord & bag.
Most cords are hand made from black waxed braid with a loop and bone toggle fitted. A woven flax presentation case and information on the meaning of the design is also included.
